Yes. Camping practices evolve. One example would be that environmental concerns have placed a stronger emphasis on “leave no trace” practices.

A:

For a leader who has not been previously certified, the pre-requisite for GSNETX Camping is Girls Scouts on the Go. This is available online and that takes approximately one hour to complete. Topics include: girl readiness, progression, and activity approval forms, etc. A leader who has already been troop camp certified, and is within 3 years of her original training and still current should complete the online recertification course.

No. Take a camping certification class and become certified again. This is similar in nature to your CPR certification.

First, as an incentive to stay current. Second, because what they previously learned is still fairly recent. Third, because we want leaders whose training was several years ago to catch up with the most recent best practices. In order to be fair to everyone and protect the integrity of the policy, the line is clear and applies to everyone.

This is a GSNETX policy that is backed up and supported by GSUSA. Safety Activity Checkpoints for Group Camping state that the leader is required to council procedures for activity approval.

Volunteer Essentials states that Leaders are required to observe all safety guidelines and Safety Activity Checkpoints, as well as procedures outlined by your council, including those that supplement or augment Girl Scouts standards.
