Seal of Approval

Girls push boundaries, test limits, and look at the world around them with inquisitive eyes. They're natural engineers and scientists! Through participation in Girl Scouts, girls of every age are introduced to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities that are relevant to everyday life. Whether they're discovering how a car's engine runs, becoming math whizzes, or learning about careers in STEM fields, girls are surrounded by STEM every day.
Our overall goal is to emphasize the STEM concepts and to help the Girl Scout participants make connections to those concepts, even in areas they traditionally do not think of as STEM. We strongly want to encourage girls to STEM areas where they are uncommonly seen to dispel the myth that girls are not as good or interested in STEM. Often, one of the biggest barriers we see to STEM is the feeling that you have to have a degree in STEM in order to effectively lead or participate in STEM activities. To overcome this fear, we have identified the STEM Seal of Approval to allow girls and leaders to identify STEM concepts in everything they do.

Click here for instructions on how to complete the STEM Seal of Approval.

Step 1

The STEM Seal of Approval Check List can be used in one of two ways:
  • STEM Seal of Approval Vendors Companies/organizations who offer programs for our members are invited to complete the STEM Seal of Approval. If they have 10 or more of the required criteria, they will be listed on the GPS Program Provider page with the STEM Seal next to their listing. To find one of these vendors, click here.
  • STEM Seal of Approval Checklist Girl Scout Troops or individuals girls are encouraged to find STEM in all activities they do using the STEM Seal of Approval Check List.
Upon completion of their first STEM program, girls can purchase the base STEM patch. Then for each additional program, they can add either a S, T, E, or M patch to build a honeycomb of STEM patches. Collect as many as you like! Certain programs will also have custom hexagon patches that will fit within the honeycomb of STEM patches as well. See instructions above to complete the necessary form to get the STEM Seal of Approval patches.

Step 2

Once done, be sure to have each girl track her points. Drawings will be held throughout the year for prizes for completed forms. To track your STEM points for a program that's completed, click here. Once a girl has completed 1 or more Seal programs, bring her completed form to any shop for a free base patch. Girls may then add to their base patch by adding the S, T, E, & M patches for each additional program they do.
