Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) will receive a $20,000 gift from Samsung to support its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) efforts in the Girl Scouting in the School Day program and provide scholarships for Gold Awardees. A check presentation and hands-on look at STEM activities during the Girl Scouting in the School Day program will take place at Moore MST Magnet School, located at 1200 Tipton Ave in Tyler, on Wednesday, December 11 at 11:45 a.m.

Samsung will be supporting Girl Scouts in East Texas by making the following gifts:

  • $15,000 to support STEM programming in the Girl Scouting in the School Day program
  • Two (2) East Texas Girl Scout Gold Awardees will each receive a $2,500 scholarship

"We are truly honored to partner with Samsung, a corporation committed to affecting positive change globally for today's youth," said Colleen Walker, CEO for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. "STEM careers are growing twice as fast as any other sector and at GSNETX, our vision is to excite, engage, and encourage girls to purse STEM-related higher education and careers. Samsung is clearly an organization that supports this vision and is investing in the future."

"Samsung aims to increase interest in STEM and encourages students to use these critical subjects to improve their community," said Ann Woo, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Samsung. "Samsung partners with Girl Scouts because the organization equips girls with STEM skills and significantly impacts the communities they serve in innovative ways."

Samsung has been investing in Texas for many years, providing product donations, scholarship funding and educational services to communities in need across the state. Texas is also home to Samsung Telecommunications America, Inc. and Samsung Austin Semiconductor, which together employ over 4,200 Texans. In April 2013, Samsung was recognized by the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives for its investment and job creation in the state. The company was acknowledged for its contributions in the community and technology leadership.

Girl Scouting in the School Day is an in-school, 12-week program for at-risk girls which provides character building and life skills training, while addressing current social issues and trends affecting girls during the most transitional time of their childhood. Currently, there are nearly 1,000 girls throughout East Texas involved in the Girl Scouting in the School Day Program.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn. A national award, it represents a Girl Scout’s time, leadership, creativity and effort contributed to making her community better, whether locally or globally, and creates change.
