The Buzz About Bees   STEM Program   Badge Program
Grade Levels Served:  D,B,J,C,S,A,F
Program Description:  Did you know that honey bees were not native to Texas? Native Americans called them the “white man’s flies.” It wasn’t until around 1821 that beekeeping became prevalent in Texas, thanks to Stephen F. Austin. Bees play a very important, but little recognized role in several ecosystems. Many species of plants and animals might not survive if bees were missing. This hands-on program explores the history of beekeeping, the tools of the trade as well as the science involved. The format can be tailored to fit pre-K to adults.
