Cookie Program Unleashes Girl Scout Cadette’s People Skills, Financial Literacy Abilities

Before heading into a G.I.R.L Media Team meeting at GSNETX headquarters, held a day before the launch of the cookie-selling season, Girl Scout Kiersten LaGrone headed to the gift shop located on-site. She found a cute, compact sign that read, “No cash? No problem! We take credit!” The 12-year-old Cadette was ready to take names and fill orders.

Now that the Cookie Program is in full swing, LaGrone is working her new sign and making sure she has her best-selling season yet. “I like meeting people, and then convincing them to go to the cookie booth to buy cookies,” said LaGrone, who added that she then takes it one step further. “I also like to convince people to buy more cookies than they had planned to buy. I ask, ‘What flavor would your family like?’”

The Cookie Program is one of many aspects LaGrone, a 7th grader from Coppell Middle School North, enjoys as a Girl Scout. “I’ve learned real-world business skills with creating a business model,” she explained.

Through this experience of selling Girl Scout cookies, LaGrone discovered that she enjoys interacting with various people. “Throughout the cookie season, I believe my selling skills get better, and I am a better money manager,” she noted. “I compute the total cost of cookies and the money owed to customers after they purchase the cookies.”

The 2020 season is LaGrone’s fifth year selling Girl Scout cookies, and she continues to learn as a girl entrepreneur. She prepared this year by attending a cookie rally to learn more about the new Lemon-Ups cookie and the latest pricing. She explored different opportunities to sell cookies. She decided one of her first tactics would be selling cookies to her mom’s sorority group after their reunion meeting.

Even during her first cookie-selling season, LaGrone sold cookies quickly and had to place another order. She also participated in a lot of booth sales. The selling was also a family affair. Her parents also sold cookies to organizations to which they belong.

Her most memorable sale? It happened in 2016 when LaGrone was working a booth sale outside of a Walmart. “A guy in a monster truck drove up and said he wanted to buy 100 boxes of cookies,” she said. “He purchased 100 cookie boxes from me!”

Her Girl Scout Experience doesn’t end after the Cookie Program. She has made new friends year-round, and has learned many life skills. “I’ve learned survival skills. I know what to do if a bear chases me,” she said.

“Our troop also got to interact with service animals and the SPCA of Texas (animal welfare agency),” which explains why LaGrone wants to become a veterinarian when she grows up.
