Amazon Sponsors the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas' Girl Scout Leadership Institute Empowering Young Women for the Second Consecutive Year

Once again, Amazon is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI), a Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) initiative. The program empowers middle and high school girls to take charge of their personal and professional goals and to positively impact their communities. Amazon's investment will fund hands-on learning programs, including visits to Amazon's local headquarters and other partner sites, where girls gain access to female mentors and exposure to a variety of career opportunities.

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute helps girls to explore their interests and develop transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and project management. Amazon's support of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute reinforces its commitment to advancing the leadership potential of all women and creating innovative opportunities for them to realize their full potential. "We want to help ensure the bright young women of GSLI have the resources they need and the guidance they deserve on their path toward great achievements and a lifetime of impact," said Vickie Yakunin, Head of Community Affairs, Dallas Region.

In our changing world, it's more important than ever for girls to learn the decision-making skills that are applicable to their work and life. Eat, Shop, Share, an annual GSLI program, is designed to do just that. "Through the program, girls develop ethical leadership qualities as well as a passion for serving others," said Jennifer Bartkowski, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. She added, "We are grateful to Amazon for its partnership which will help the institute identify new, effective approaches to leadership development and diversify the curriculum.

Eat, Shop, Share will take place on December 3rd at The Village at Allen. During the event, GSLI girls in grades 8-12 shop for Girl Scouts families in need and participate in creating the project budget. "Each year, we receive a list from Girl Scout families in need, with their family members, their interests, and sizes. The GSLI girls then decide what to purchase based on these requests and must stay within the defined budget. This teaches them about spending wisely and being responsible with the funds they are entrusted to use," said Gerri Gordon, Older Girl Program Coordinator at Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas.

Financial knowledge plays a role in almost every aspect of life, from making career decisions to buying your first house, getting married, having children, and more. The ability to set financial goals is critical for a career in finance, accounting, economics, or any other field where money management skills are valued. And yet financial education is still not taught in most schools, without GSLI and other Girl Scout programming most of these girls would not be exposed to these critical topics.

Following the shopping activity, the girls offer their feedback and suggestions for how to improve the GSLI curriculum. This discussion is important to the institute’s evolution and enhancement, as well as the girls’ own growth; they learn to measure the impact of their experiences, determine what modifications are needed, and communicate effectively. Girl-led programming is also an essential piece of the Girl Scout journey. Girls who participate in decision-making processes at an early age are more likely to become active leaders in their communities and professional careers.

We Are Girl Scouts

Whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges. Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas serves girls and adult volunteers across 32 counties. To change the workforce pipeline in STEM and meet the urgent need for female voices, engagement, and leadership in the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. economy, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas opened the STEM Center of Excellence in 2018. The STEM Center is a 92-acre state-of-the-art camp just outside of Dallas where girls can experience programs in astronomy, robotics, coding, computer science, and more. Recently, the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Board of Directors was recognized with Dallas Business Journal's Outstanding Directors Award and received the Luminary Award from SMU's Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development.
