This summer, Camp Whispering Cedars embarked on an extraordinary journey that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Our “West Texas Adventure Summer Camp Experience” was not just a trip; it was a transformative adventure that showcased the character, confidence and the courageous spirit of our Girl Scouts. Over ten days, Seniors and Ambassadors embraced challenges, explored the vast landscapes of West Texas, and created memories that will last a lifetime.
The girls demonstrated what it means to be truly adventurous through their preparation, enthusiasm, and sheer willpower. It all began with an intensive three-day orientation where counselors equipped them with the essential skills for camping—from pitching tents to managing camp stoves. By the time they reached Davis Mountains State Park, the campers were ready to face the elements confidently together.
June 26: Our expedition began with an early morning departure to Monahans Sandhills State Park. We learned about the area's rich history and took exhilarating rides down the sand hills. As the sun set, we arrived at our campsite, where, despite the challenges of setting up in the dark, the girl’s positivity shone brightly. Their teamwork and determination turned a stressful situation into a bonding experience.
June 27: The day was packed with exploration and discovery. We ventured to the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, to experience the beauty of native plants and butterflies. The afternoon included an awe-inspiring visit to McDonald Observatory, where the girls were able to see galaxies, nebulas, and other star clusters.
June 28: The day began with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, one of the world’s largest. Our girls learned about the intricate science behind the telescope and were captivated by its immense mirrors. The adventure continued with a visit to Marfa’s Prada Store art installation and a refreshing swim in Balmorhea State Park’s spring-fed pool. We were even surprised with a rain shower; however, our girls handled the situation with grace and efficiency, ensuring our equipment and camp site stayed dry.
June 29: We explored Terlingua Ghost Town before heading to Big Bend National Park. The Window Viewing Trail offered breathtaking vistas, and the lessons on dry heat from park Rangers emphasized the importance of hydration. Girls were also about to explore Fossil Discovery Exhibit and learned that a large amount of dinosaur bones were discovered in Big Bend National Park and many were preserved at the Perot Museum. Our day concluded with a group photo and a delightful dinner at Blue Mountain Grill in Fort Davis.
June 30: Our final day in Fort Davis started with a hike at Davis Mountains State Park. The stunning views and pleasant weather made it a perfect farewell to the park. We then traveled to Camp Mitre Peak, where we enjoyed a delicious dinner.
July 1-2: After participating in the camp’s flag-up ceremony and enjoying breakfast, we began our journey back to Dallas. The trip back was filled with reflections on our experiences and the friendships forged. We concluded the journey with a relaxing poolside night swim and a well-deserved rest.
As we wrapped up our trip, the campers helped unload and pack up. Their bravery, adaptability, and enthusiasm throughout the adventure were truly remarkable. The West Texas Adventure was not just about the places we visited but about the incredible growth and experiences shared along the way.
