Find out how geography shapes our lives and why places matter. Learn how to use geospatial technologies to explore our world and improve your community. Discover career paths and opportunities for your future. The activities in the workshop will fulfill partial requirements for the Cadette STEM Career Exploration Badge.

Important: This workshop is part of a dissertation research study, conducted by Texas State University graduate student, Lisa Elikan. Ms. Elikan is specifically recruiting Girl Scouts in the 6th-8th grade levels (Cadettes) to discover ways that educators within non-formal educational environments (such as the Girl Scouts organization) may increase middle school-aged girls’ motivation for exploring geography and/or geospatial technologies studies and future careers.

The activities include group discussions, viewing of short videos (on geography concepts and careers), an online career path quiz, hands-on activities with GPS units, and geographic data collection and mapping with a software application. The study’s data collection methods include a brief pre-activity survey, post-activity survey (both administered with paper/pen), and a group interview at the conclusion of the activities. A consent form must be signed by the parent/guardian prior to participation in the workshop.

For any questions about the research study/workshop, please contact Lisa Elikan at lde54@txstate.edu or (409) 789-4529.
