Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas marked a significant milestone with the 30th anniversary of Eagle's Nest Twilight Camp in Allen. This camp has grown into a beloved tradition and a cornerstone of our community, nurturing leadership, camaraderie, and outdoor adventure for three decades. Known for its vibrant mother-daughter participation, supportive dads providing security, and an active boys' unit, Eagle's Nest Twilight Camp exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and community engagement that is at the heart of Girl Scouting.
Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, this camp has been a beacon of fun and learning, fostering friendships and creating lasting memories for countless families over the years. The evening was a true reflection of the camp's essence, offering a joyful and enriching experience for all participants. It underscored the excitement and joy that outdoor adventures bring, with older girls leading the charge in organizing various activities such as obstacle courses, archery, capture the flag, and treasure hunts.
Allen's Mayor, Bain L. Brooks, inaugurated the celebrations with an inspiring speech followed by an impressive axe-throwing demonstration. He presented an official proclamation, designating June 10-14, 2024, as "Eagle's Nest Twilight Camp Week." The proclamation commended the camp's enduring legacy and its vital role in providing high-quality outdoor experiences that instill confidence, resilience, and a love for the great outdoors in every camper. Mayor Brooks praised the passionate volunteers who devote their time to consistently making this camp a magical experience.
As we celebrated the camp's rich history, we heard from some of the mothers and daughters who have been integral to its ongoing success. Their stories reflect the profound impact this camp has had on our community, reinforcing its legacy for future generations.
Amy B: Growth and Memories
Amy has served as a devoted unit leader and volunteer at Eagle's Nest for seven years. She cherishes the annual photo she takes with her daughter, capturing the special memories they create together. Amy finds joy in witnessing all the wonderful campers mature and take on leadership roles. She especially loves seeing their excitement as they run down the hill with their pickle buckets, ready for an evening of fun and friendship. Even though her daughter couldn't attend the anniversary celebration, Amy ensured the snack station ran smoothly with the help of two older girls from her former troop.
Shelly & Abby H: Archery and Togetherness
Eagle's Nest has held a special place in the hearts of Shelly and her daughter Abby for 15 years. Shelly has seen Abby, who started as a young camper, grow into a confident co-leader who now mentors’ other campers at the Archery station with her, helping share their love of the sport. She feels grateful that camp has allowed them to connect in a meaningful way and has helped foster her daughter’s leadership skills in a supportive and fun environment.
Jennifer & Alexis M: Rediscovering Camp Through New Eyes
Jennifer has been volunteering at Eagle's Nest for three years and is excited to finally experience the camp alongside her daughter, Alexis, who has been attending the camp for many years. Jennifer is now working with the youngest campers and takes pride in helping them tackle challenges such as hiking big hills. Alexis is part of the team of older girl volunteers who have been planning the camp since March. She says that seeing the campers' smiles makes all their hard work worthwhile.
Sarah & Remy S: Embracing New Experiences
Sarah and her daughter Remy have been enjoying adventures at Eagles Nest for six years. Sarah delights in seeing Remy try new things and embrace new challenges every summer that she wouldn’t encounter elsewhere. Remy fondly reminisced about funny and lighthearted camp moments such as spraying her mom with silly string. For Sarah and Remy, the camp provides them both with valuable learning experiences, the opportunity to work with a great group of kids and helps strengthen their bond with one another.
Michelle, Haley, & “Lithium”: A Legacy of Leadership
Michelle’s journey with Eagle's Nest began in 1994 as a camper, and now as a mother of two Girl Scouts. Michelle loves seeing her daughters embrace the camp experience too and inspire others. Her daughter Haley, who spent the evening at the axe-throwing station, looks forward to meeting new people and reconnecting with friends every summer. While her other daughter, known at camp as "Lithium," values the opportunity to share her enthusiasm for STEM at the STEM station.
🌟 As we celebrate the past, present, and future of this cherished camp, we look forward to creating a nurturing environment for girls to thrive for the next 30 years and beyond. For more information about Day and Twilight Camp, visit gsnetx.org/daytwilight.
