My troop experience in Troop 647 has been magnificent. Today, I will share my top 5 tips for Girl Scout Troops from my own and [fellow Girl Scout] Riley Lamb’s experience in Troop 6885.
1. Start Early
If you are on the edge of starting your own troop, know this: your effort could inspire a girl to achieve heights she never would have dreamed off without Girl Scouts. If you already have a troop, then make sure that you are productive in helping girls. How can you do that? You need resources. How will you get resources? Use the summer to your advantage and find trips that your Girl Scouts can take to visit businesses and meet with professionals from every field.
2. Build Multi-Level Troops
By having both younger and older girls in one troop, both sides build on each other’s needs. The younger girls have mentors that can help them complete badges and have role models. The older girls will get the leadership experience they need and will build a sense of responsibility seeing the younger girls following their lead. In addition, the older girls will take the lead in organizing events and will inspire the younger girls to take the initiative.
3. Encourage Earning the Higher Awards
The support of a troop can be the difference that inspires a Girl Scout to take the steps to get her Higher Awards and make a sustainable change in the world. Troops can encourage this effort by holding workshops and helping girls submit their proposals. For my Bronze Award, it was my troop leader that helped us set up communication with organizations and raise funds.
4. Fund Events
Learning how to manage money is just one benefit of holding events and funding. Getting sponsorships for events helps girls learn social skills as it takes a lot of persuasion to get sponsors. Riley mentioned that funding for her Savannah trip also built a lot of excitement for her trip and will make the trip feel like a real achievement.
5. Have Fun!
Work aside, Girl Scouts is a place where you can feel safe and happy. In my troop, my Level Leader and Troop Leader – shoutouts to Sr. Rabeeya and Sr. Saima – always find a way to make the situation fun. As Ambassadors, we went to escape rooms and got boba together. These experiences build the sisterhood Girl Scouts is all about.
Those were my top 5 tips of how to create a magnificent troop experience.
