Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Celebrate Partnership with Solar Energy Panel Discussion
DALLAS, TX – Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) welcomed Green Mountain Energy Sun Club to their headquarters on Tuesday, October 15 for an exciting partnership announcement, which includes a $115,000 grant aimed at enhancing sustainability initiatives. The event featured a check presentation and a panel discussion moderated by Aspen Cunningham, a Gold Award Girl Scout and young sustainability leader whose Gold Award project utilized solar energy.
The grant will fund the installation of a 116-panel solar array on two buildings at Camp Gambill outside Paris, TX, providing energy cost savings of $8,000 a year. The collaboration exemplifies both organizations' commitment to fostering a greener future by empowering young leaders of tomorrow to one day take innovative new strides in sustainability efforts.
"This project is very near and dear to my heart, being a woman in the field of sustainability," said Meghan Kumar, Senior Manager of Strategy at Green Mountain Energy. "It’s important to protect the environment for future generations and ensure future generations can grow in an environment that looks like the one we enjoy today."
Founded in 2002, Sun Club aims to amplify the impact of renewable energy initiatives. The charitable program selects grant recipients based on the potential environmental, financial, and social impacts of their projects. Johnny Richardson, Program Manager of Sun Club, noted, "In the case for Girl Scouts, it was very easy to see that clear distinction of how we can make [Camp Gambill’s] environment a better place and make it more impactful for these girls that are the future."
Ashley Crowe, GSNETX Chief Mission Delivery Officer, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "It’s so important that girls see the world around them and make the world a better place. That’s core to our mission." She looks forward to Girl Scouts having learning moments at the camp "so they can actually see what it means to use solar power and how it can impact the world around them" and take that new knowledge back to their communities and make their own impacts on sustainability.
The partnership not only enhances Camp Gambill but also provides Girl Scouts with up-close experience with solar energy and an opportunity to deepen their understanding of STEM and renewable energy.
