Kelsey Jahnke: Transforming Personal Loss into a Mission for Fentanyl Awareness

In a transformative journey marked by resilience and purpose, Kelsey Jahnke, a Plano West Senior High School senior, is on a quest to turn the narrative of tragedy into one of cautionary awareness. Originally intending to focus her Girl Scout Gold Award project on servicing the Deaf community, Kelsey's vision took a detour following the heartbreaking loss of her friend and Girl Scout sister, Sienna Vaughn, to fentanyl poisoning earlier this year.

A Sudden Turn and a Mission Realigned
Sienna's passing acted as a catalyst, leading Kelsey to pivot her focus towards raising awareness about the life-threatening risks of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.
"It was a calling," she said. "I had to honor Sienna and hopefully prevent other families from experiencing this immeasurable pain."
The Road So Far
Determined to make a meaningful impact, Kelsey embarked on an educational crusade. She set up an information table at Sienna's candlelight vigil to involve the community directly, offering an avenue for volunteers to participate and support the cause. Kelsey hung posters on the walls of Plano West on National Fentanyl Awareness Day and attended multiple fentanyl awareness events, such as the Fentanyl Drug Forum hosted by the Plano Police Department, Governor Abbott's 'One Pill Kills Summit' in Austin, and the Substance Abuse Panel at Plano Senior High School.

Upcoming Initiatives
Kelsey is currently organizing a highly anticipated fentanyl awareness event set for Saturday, September 23rd, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2401 Legacy Dr, Plano, TX 75023). The event will run from 10 AM to 12 PM with an impressive line-up of speakers from organizations such as Plano PD Crime Prevention Unit, GraceToChange, Barnes Mobile CPR, and LifePath Systems who will contribute their expertise to the event. Furthermore, partnerships have been established with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Texas Against Fentanyl, and UT Health San Antonio, among others, and confirmed coverage by The Dallas Morning News to amplify the reach of Kelsey's efforts.
Beyond the Event
Kelsey's vision extends even further. She plans to collaborate with her high school's counseling department and Hope Squad to organize activities for Red Ribbon Week in October and will continue her awareness-raising efforts on National Fentanyl Awareness Day next year. She is also a member of the Texas Against Fentanyl (TXAF) Teen Anti-Drug Ambassador group for Plano.
